How to Set Up Rubrics

A rubric is a set of guidelines that distinguishes performances or products of different quality. A rubric describes what to look for at each level of performance. Rubrics also often have indicators providing specific examples of things to look for in work.

A good rubric provides a consistent and reliable means for assessing performance, as well as providing students with clear and written explanations of the instructors expectations of a performance.

Once you create content items and make them gradable, you can then create rubrics. Rubrics can be created for course items, course tools, and custom items. See Select Gradable Items.

You can set up rubrics, edit existing rubrics, delete existing rubrics, and copy rubrics to other course items.

To set up rubrics:

  1. From Gradebook, click Setup Gradebook & Rubrics.
  2. Click the Rubrics link. A list of your content items is displayed.
  3. For any of the content items listed, click Assign Rubric to begin assigning rubrics to the lessons in your course.
  4. Type a name for the new rubric in the text field. As you type the name, the button below the field changes to Add as a New Rubric. Existing rubrics may display if the name you are typing uses the same beginning characters/words.
  5. Click Add a New Rubric.
  6. Add a Description to the field.
  7. Select your choice of options to either Use for numeric grade and/or Show to student.
  8. Enter a criterion name and description. Click the delete icon to remove any criteria you do not wish to keep.
  9. Click Level to enter a level name and description. Click the delete icon to remove any levels you do not wish to keep.
  10. Enter Points as desired.
  11. Continue to add levels as desired.
  12. Continue to enter criteria or click Save to complete the rubric.

As you complete a rubric, you can then add additional rubrics to your remaining course items and lessons.
